Interior Glazing

Interior Glazing

Interior Glazing is increasingly popular in commercial and residential buildings allowing natural light to flood throughout the building or act as a design feature. For safety reasons, the glass used for interior glazing in glass doors, partitions and stairs is frequently toughened or laminated.

Toughened glass is a single layer safety glass which has been strengthened by re-heating after processing to the desired shape and requirements. The balanced internal stresses created during this heating process cause the glass to shatter into small, granular chunks instead of the more dangerous shards of nonLaminated glass is a type of safety glass that holds together when shattered. In the event of breaking, it is held in place by an interlayer, typically of polyvinylbutyral (PVB), between its two or more layers of glass. The interlayer keeps the layers of glass bonded even when broken, and its high strength prevents the glass from breaking up into large sharp pieces. This produces a characteristic spider web cracking pattern when the impact is not enough to completely pierce the glass.

Laminated glass is normally used when there is a possibility of human impact or where the glass could fall if shattered. Laminated glass is often used in exterior storefronts, curtain walls and interior office partitions.

The PVB interlayer also gives a the glass a much higher sound isolation rating, due to the damping effect, and also blocks 99% of incoming UV radiation.

1Product Advantages

Windell use Pilkington OptilamTM which is produced by combining two or more sheets of glass with polyvinylbutyral interlayers. It is this lamination that enables it to offer impact protection and safety. The interlayers ensure the integrity of the glass by holding the broken pieces in place should damage occur.

When impacted, OptilamTM is designed to remain intact or to break safely in such a way as to reduce injury. Glass fragments adhere strongly to the interlayer – with the resistant cushioning effect dissipating the energy.

OptilamTM can be used in applications where it is subject to accidental human impact. Depending on the configuration OptilamTM can be used in applications where resistance to manual attack is required.

According to BS EN 356, glass in buildings is divided into categories, of resistance to manual attack on the basis of results of tests carried out with the use of a hard body impactor and an axe. This data is available in Datasheet ‘Safety Performance ’

OptilamTM reduces the level of noise with considerably greater efficiency than ordinary glass of the same thickness – in fact, it is superior to Insulating Glass Units having the same total thickness of glass.

OptilamTM absorbs UV radiation, which can affect the colour of objects exposed to it. OptilamTM has very low UV transmission, which may help top protect those materials prone to fading when subject to prolonged exposure to UV radiation.

OptilamTM can be manufactured with various types of interlayer and glass to provide good solar control and aesthetic effects for special applications.

OptilamTM can be supplied incorporating low emissivity glass such as Pilkington K GlassTM and Pilkington OptithermTM to ensure optimum thermal comfort.

By varying the number of layers and thickness of the glass, it can offer many benefits and be used in various applications. This option of laminated glass incorporates coloured interlayers, thus offering a wider choice of colours than body tinted glass for more design options.

2Construction

For Frameless construction:

With its broad spectrum of basic types and variants, the DORMA Universal range of patch fittings enables the realisation in toughened glass of almost any conceivable design. Toughened glass assemblies can be provided with fixed parts in widely differing arrangements - with corner fittings or fin fittings at different angles, and with double or single action doors in single-leaf or double-leaf designs. Carefully considered and positive measures have been taken to create the maximum clamping surface with optimum clamping efficiency.

DORMA Universal fittings are supplied as standard with gasket to suit 10 mm glass. For 8 mm and 12 mm glass, correspondingly thicker and thinner gasket is available. Some patches are even designed to fit directly with different glass thicknesses.

The inserts for corner and over-panel patches in the DORMA Universal program have been designed and manufactured to give two options in the pivot point distance from the side-panel or frame. It can be either 55 mm or 65 mm. At 65 mm pivot point and the use of a special round profile doors can be built with a constant air gap of only 4 mm.

Quality materials and thorough workmanship mean that DORMA’s Universal fittings have the features necessary to meet the most demanding of specifications. The fittings are designed to cope with large and heavy doors up to a maximum weight of 130 kgs: for instance, a door blade 3000 mm high by 1300 mmwide, using 12 mm glass is quite possible. For heavier and wider doors up to a maximum of 150 kgs and max 1400 mm and for high frequented doors, rails with reinforced straps are available.

The DORMA Universal range includes every type of accessory, and of course, a variety of locks and strike boxes in a matching design concept, giving the designer plenty of choice from the options available.

3Materials

Aluminium profiles are extruded from aluminium alloy 6060T6, T5 or T4 complying with the recommendations of BS EN 12020-2 / BS EN 755 Parts 1 to 9. Polyamide thermal breaks are produced from glass reinforced nylon sections designed to withstand temperatures in excess of 200°C, allowing the sections to be powder coated after thermally breaking.

The range of sections can be provided in either of the following ranges of finishes:

1:            Anodised to BS 1615 or BS 3987 or BS EN 12373-1

2:            Powder organic coated to BS 6496 or BS EN 12206-1

This system can accommodate a different colour finish internally to that used externally.
The powder coating is produced to Qualicoat standards.
